Q: What items make great donations?
A: Anything that is desirable, unique and of high quality such as:
“Priceless” unique experiences fetch A LOT of money: a parent with a special skill (athletes, cooks, artists, or a professional skill for private or group lessons), a ride in a police car, meet a local professional sports hero, a tour and/or dinner at the local firehouse, items made by children. Other great items include restaurant gift certificates, vacation getaways, hotel stays, sporting event tickets, sports memorabilia, wine collections, specialty local beer, entertainment tickets (theater, symphony, opera, ballet, concert), fun activities for kids (birthday parties at local businesses, horseback riding, rock climbing classes, ski lessons), and fun outings for adults (craft beer tour, winery tour, spa day, boat cruise, etc). Most NEW household items, jewelry, electronics, collectables, creative artwork, kids’ toys, etc., can make great auction items on their own or can be included in one of our auction baskets.
Q: If I don’t have new items to donate, what else can I do?
A: Can you host a party?
Hosting a party is a great way to meet other John Rogers families. Examples of parties hosted in the past include; Babes on Boats (boat ride for 20 plus drinks and snacks), Fundamentals of Cooking Class (10 children cooking class) and Boot Camp (a multi-week exercise class for 10) OR you could offer a weekend at your cabin or vacation home? Provide a service such as babysitting, house cleaning, painting, home organizing or gardening? Do you cook or bake? Make jewelry? Knit? Sew? Handmade items sell well! Do you own a business? You could also place an ad in our auction catalog; it’s seen by hundreds of people!
Q: How do I approach a business to ask for a donation?
A: First, check the businesses website.
Many businesses these days have donation procedures on their websites that may include online donation forms, so check there first for guidelines. If not, send a request by email or mail. If it’s a small local business, sometimes the best thing is to stop by in person. However you contact them, please use our procurement letter and donation form when approaching your connections which can be found on the auction bulletin board outside the front office, or you can download these documents below. This is a Google doc that lists businesses already contacted and where you would add your contacts: http://bit.ly/2gCWatj
Q: Are there any other ways to get involved with procurement?
Please contact your Room Parent to help with your classroom’s auction ART project and/or themed gift basket, which are always HUGE sellers at the auction! And we always need WINE donated for both serving at the auction and for our wine games.
Q: When is the deadline for procurement and where do I leave donations?
A: Procurement forms and items are due February 10, 2017.
You can bring donated items to school, there is a bin located by the front office. You can also contact Janay or Lori for a donation pick up.
